Basic Reflexes of the Neonate

there are 7 refelexes for the
neonate :

1- Sucking reflex : in which the baby tends to suck any object
comes in contact with his lip .
- it is essential for nutritionla intake

- oral satisfaction
- it disapears at 12 month .

2- Rooting
reflex : the baby tends to move his head in direction of the stimulant and opens
his mouth when
touching cheek or mouth by objects.
disapears at 7 months
.

3- Spontenous refelexes :
1- swallowing : usually follows sucking

2- gagging : due to immature cardiac sphincter
3- yawning : to increase
O2 intake
4- streching
5- sneezig and coughing :to clear respiratory
passage .

4- Moro refex : symmetrical extend of both arms and legs and
then draw them up in normal reflexed position in response to :
CNS indicator
, sudden movement or loud noise . disappear by 6 month .

5-- Grasp reflex
:
1- palmar grasp : lessen at 3-a months .
2- planter grasp :lessens at
8 month

6- Tonic neck reflex : the baby lies on his back with head
turned to one side .

- the arms and legs in the same extend and the
opposite side flex .

disapear at 3-4 months .

6-Stepping reflex
:
when the newborn held upright it makes steps on touchin a hadr surface by
feet .

7- Babinski,s reflex : tends to hyperextend his toes with
dorsiflextion of big toe when one side stimulated .
disappears at 1 yr .
